Ignite Problem Solving in Every Student.

What is Lesson Study?

Lesson Study is a hands-on professional learning opportunity designed for educators who want to grow their craft together. Each session revolves around a specific theme, with a focus on student learning and teacher growth. Dr. Yeap Ban Har leads the research and instruction throughout the workshop, guiding the process as both the expert and the teacher who models each lesson. Participants aren’t just watching from the sidelines—they’re an active part of every step.

In this workshop, you’ll:

  • Work as a team to design a lesson
  • Observe students as they experience the lesson in real time
  • Analyze and reflect on what you see, always circling back to the core theme

Why Participate in Lesson Study?

This isn’t your typical professional development. You’ll learn directly from Dr. Yeap Ban Har and Sarah Schaefer, gaining practical insights you can actually use. Then, you’ll have the chance to see these ideas play out in the classroom and reflect on what works. The aim isn’t perfection—it’s about digging deeper into what makes for powerful math teaching. Lesson Study connects educational research with classroom practice, helping you sharpen your approach and make a lasting impact on your students.

What to Expect

How Lesson Study Works

Our Lesson Study begins with participants diving into research to frame their approach. Together, teachers design a lesson, intentionally building in strategies—“triggers”—that prompt students to engage in problem solving. As the lesson unfolds, one teacher leads while the others observe, watching closely for how students respond. The team then gathers to reflect, tweak the lesson, and try again. This cycle of research, planning, observation, and reflection helps teachers fine-tune their moves and nurture students’ mathematical thinking.
